The short version

  • Your receipts stay on your phone.
  • To read a receipt, Otti sends its photo to an AI service. Nobody keeps it to train AI, and we don’t keep it either.
  • There’s no account to make. We never ask for your name or email, unless you choose to give it to us.
  • We don’t sell your information, show ads, or track you around the web.
  • This website has no cookies and no analytics.

Who we are

Otti is made by Henry Stoupe, an independent developer in New Zealand. “We” and “us” in this policy mean him. If you have a question about your information, email hello@useotti.app.

What stays on your phone

Your receipts and their photos, the items on them, who had what, the names of the people you split with, your notes and reminders, and your settings. These never leave your phone unless you share them yourself.

To delete them, use Settings › Delete All Receipts, or delete Otti.

What happens when you scan a receipt

Otti sends the photo to our server, which runs on Supabase in Sydney, Australia. Our server passes it to OpenRouter, an AI service, which sends it to Google’s Gemini model to read. What comes back (the shop, the date, the items and prices) is saved on your phone.

  • Our server doesn’t keep the photo, and OpenRouter doesn’t either.
  • Google doesn’t use it to train its AI or to improve its products. It may keep the request for a limited time to check its service isn’t being misused, and then deletes it.

For each scan we keep a few facts about how it went: how long it took, whether it worked, what it cost us and how many lines it found. A day later, Otti also tells us how many lines you had to fix, so we can see how well scanning works. These are counts only. They never include the shop, the items, the prices or anyone’s names.

Your Otti ID

The first time Otti opens, it gives your phone an anonymous ID. It isn’t linked to your name, email or phone number. We use it to count your free scans and to know whether you have Otti Pro. On iPhone it’s kept in your Keychain, so it stays the same if you reinstall Otti.

Otti Pro

Apple or Google take the payment, so we never see your card details. RevenueCat, the service we use to manage subscriptions, gets your Otti ID and your purchases from Apple or Google, so Otti knows you have Pro.

Checking the app is genuine

On iPhone, Apple’s App Attest lets our server check that scans come from a real copy of Otti, so nobody can run up free scans with a script. It uses a key kept on your phone. Apple doesn’t learn anything about your receipts.

When something goes wrong

If Otti runs into an error, it sends us a report so we can fix it. A report says what went wrong and the steps just before it, with your phone’s model, its software version, Otti’s version and your Otti ID. Reports never include what’s on your receipts. We delete them after 90 days.

Feedback

If you send us feedback, we get your message and whatever you choose to add: your name or email, so we can reply, and the receipt’s photo, if you leave Include receipt photo on. We keep feedback so we can come back to it. Ask us and we’ll delete it.

Camera, photos and notifications

Otti uses your camera and your photo library only to take or choose a receipt’s photo, when you ask it to. Notifications about finished scans and reminders are made on your phone; nothing about them goes to us.

This website

  • Beta sign-ups. If you join the beta, we keep your email and whether you have an iPhone or Android phone, in Otti’s database. We use them only to send your invite and to tell you about the test. We’ll delete the list once Otti is out of testing, and you can ask to come off it any time.
  • No cookies, analytics or ads. The site is hosted by Vercel, which, like any web host, keeps short-lived logs of visits (such as your IP address and browser) to keep the site running.

Who else handles your information

Only the services above, each for its own part:

  • Supabase: our server and database, in Sydney, Australia
  • OpenRouter and Google: reading your receipts
  • RevenueCat: subscriptions
  • Apple and Google: the app stores, payments and App Attest
  • Vercel: this website

Some of these are outside New Zealand, mostly in Australia and the United States. We don’t sell your information or share it with anyone else, unless the law requires us to.

Your rights

Under New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 you can ask to see the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@useotti.app with your Otti ID (in Otti: Settings › Help & Feedback › Copy User ID) so we can find it. We’ll reply within 20 working days.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects what we do with your information, we’ll tell you in Otti too.
